Thin‑Film Science Intern
Rolex (Geneva) seeks a Thin‑Film Science Intern for a 6‑month R&D internship to develop optical simulation tools and validate thin‑film coatings.
Overview
Rolex is a Swiss luxury watchmaker headquartered in Geneva, recognised for technical precision, material innovation and artisanal craftsmanship. As an employer, Rolex combines rigorous engineering and scientific research with high standards of quality and long‑term investment in employee development.
Role & Responsibilities
- Develop and run numerical simulations of thin‑film multilayer stacks to achieve target colours and optical responses.
- Design and implement algorithms that incorporate surface roughness effects into optical response models.
- Analyse simulation outputs to identify key parameters influencing measured spectra (interfaces, alloys, density, etc.).
- Plan and execute experimental validation tests to confront theoretical models with laboratory measurements.
- Compile and present a written end‑of‑internship report documenting methods, results and conclusions.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Master's programme in materials physics, optics or an equivalent discipline.
- Academic project or significant coursework in optical simulation, preferably using FEM or BEM methods.
- Strong programming proficiency in Matlab, Python and/or C++.
- Familiarity with thin‑film deposition processes (ALD, PVD, PECVD) is an advantage.
- Scientific curiosity, analytical rigour and methodical approach to problem solving.
- Good interpersonal skills; proactive, autonomous and able to integrate into multidisciplinary teams.
Skills
Experience
Academic experience or project work in optical simulation and modelling of thin films, ideally employing finite element or boundary element techniques; laboratory experience validating simulations against experimental measurements is desirable.
Education
Enrolled in a Master's degree in Materials Physics, Optics or an equivalent programme.
Benefits
A stimulating environment, excellent working conditions and top‑tier social benefits.
Culture
Rolex combines a culture of exacting technical standards with deep respect for craftsmanship and material science. Research teams operate in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment where scientific rigour and attention to detail are highly valued.
